So you’re planning to propose – now what? You have the main goal down: You’ve found the one you want to spend the rest of your life with. But planning a proposal can be overwhelming. Working in the photography business, specifically with intimate weddings and elopements, I’ve heard firsthand what couples loved (or wish they had done) at their proposal. Let’s walk through a few key elements:
Capture the moment! I’ve had the joy of photographing the big moment from afar (think paparazzi style), or being right there when the question is popped. If you’re already having couple’s photos done, that’s a great time for me to snap the proposal! But if you are going on a hike, or to a special spot that only the two of you know about, then I can capture the moment from afar if you don’t want your significant other to be tipped off.
While having a photographer is a great way to capture the big day, there are other ways to make sure the moment doesn’t fade with time. Consider having an audio recorder at the proposal sight so you can hear the precious words exchanged. You could also write out what you want to say, so you will always have a written memento from that day.
Incorporate something that is important to both of you. Do you have a city or a place that is special to you both? Consider popping the question at a place that is sentimental to the two of you. Maybe it’s where your first date was, or where you first said I love you. Wherever it is, make it a place that brings nothing but happy memories to the two of you.
Make the proposal space special. If you’re proposing at a park that’s special to you both, go ahead of time and set up a little area for a picnic with your favorite foods and a bottle of bubbly. Do you have a playlist of your favorite songs together? You could play it in the background while you’re proposing.
No matter what – remember that the day is going to be FUN and going to be one you remember forever. If something doesn’t go quite to plan, that’s okay! Because you’re about to start the rest of your life with your better half and that is what matters most.
